Tree Preservation Calendar

 

 

January

  • General dormant safety pruning, reducing size on tall trees that resist wind and threaten to uproot.
  • The Water Oak, Laurel Oak, Hickory, Pecan, Bradford Pear and Maple trees have been rated to show a low wind tolerance.
  • January is also the recommended time for transplanting/ relocating trees and shrubs with the least amount of negative impact to the plant.

  


 

February

  • Safety pruning begins in preparation for upcoming hurricane season.
  • This is also an excellent time to add a fresh layer of mulch around your trees.

 


 

March

  • Begin Hurricane Preparation (Click link for detailed information.) 
  • Now is an excellent time to prune palms to remove dead fronds.
  • General pruning and thinning of vigorous growing trees causing over-crowding to encourage beneficial landscape tree growth.
  • Continue safety pruning.

 


 

April

  • Aesthetic pruning of smaller ornamental trees.
  • Focus on landscape continuity, design, simplicity, etc.

June

  • General pruning; deterrent to rodents and insects bridging to home by trimming trees away from buildings, lamp posts, walkways, overhead utility lines and driveways.
  • Removing dead wood and begin shaping.
  • Monitor Oak trees through the summer and autumn months for evidence of Sudden Oak Death (S.O.D.) and Oak Wilt.

 


 

July

  • General tree maintenance for health, safety and vigor.
  • Monitor water levels as drought conditions have been in effect for a few years.

 


 

August

  • The temperatures are heating up so additional watering could be required for young trees and trees with shallow root systems.
  • Increase awareness of diseases affecting landscape trees.

 


 

September

  • General Tree maintenance for health, safety and vigor.
  • Continue monitoring of water requirements.

 


 

October

  • Soil samples collected to test for changes in soil characteristics and begin fertilization planning for our hardiness zone 8-9.
  • Excellent time to start planning for next year.

 


 

November

  • Safety pruning to restore any trees damaged by wind or storms.

 


 

December

  • Dormant, safety pruning and general tree maintenance.
